One of the trickiest things for professors and phd students is thinking about their financial future. Personal finance is one of the easiest, but most difficult things that you have to deal with. I want you to get wealthy, and here is what I have learnt. The best thing that you can do is save 15% of your total income. If you have debts, pay those debts off first. There are two good options for mutual funds: Buy index funds. I buy VTI index funds from Vanguard. No reason, other than Vanguard is one of the oldest index fund companies. Look for mutual funds that are broadly diversified, and old that match or slightly beat the market. You cannot beat the market. What you are doing is having a slightly higher risk profile than the current market. I have many different mutual funds in Fidelity, American Funds, and others. The brand is less important than whether the advisor is helpful. If you do this for several decades, you will have built a substantial amount of wealth. Leverage opportunities at your university, but don’t absolutely trust these advisors. Here are things not to invest in: Single technologies, stocks, or single companies. These tend to be very risky investments. Students or friends, unless you are thinking about investing in these endeavors as charities. Topics include the sharing economy, altruism, investing in technology, starting a business, and bounded rationality. My favorite videos pertain to incentives, goal setting, and learning from failure to drive behaviors such as weight loss, stopping telemarketers, creating novel technologies, and creating new movements. https://r3ciprocity.com : Peer proofreading and editing platform A new platform where you can earn credits by editing other people's documents. Use these credits to have your own work edited. If you do a good enough job, you can convert these credits to money. The goal of the platform is to get people to 'pay it forward' and help other people out by creating incentives for people to give back.
