Polymer is a Greek word in which (Poly) means ‘many’ and Mer means ‘part’. Thus a polymer is named because it is made of small parts or units called monomers. Types and properties of synthetic fibres:- Rayon Rayon is also known as artificial silk. This fibre is obtain by chemical treatment of naturally occurred higher polymer cellulose or wood pulp. First of cellulose is purified then sodium hydroxide and carbon disulphide is mixed with it. Then it is converted into a viscous liquid. This is known as ‘Viscose.’ Purified cellulose + sodium hydroxide + carbon disulphide = Viscous liquid (चिपचिपा या गाढा) This viscose is passed through fine pores and treated with dilute sulphuric acid then rayon fibre is obtained. Viscose + Dilute sulphuric acid Rayon Rayon is similar to natural silk. It is cheaper than silk. It can be woven easily. Rayon is mixed with cotton to make bedsheets or mixed with wool to make carpets. Nylon Nylon is made by mixing adipic acid and hexamethylene diamine. It is completely synthetic fibre. Nylon is the strongest fibre. It is elastic in nature and light in weight. It is lustrous and can be cleaned easily. Due to its high strength it is used in making ropes for rock climbing and parachutes, stocking, seatbelts, tents, sleeping bag, curtains etc. Orlone It is obtained by the polymerization of acetonitriles. Its fibre is similar to wool. Dacron It is obtained by the polymerization of ethylene glycol and teraphthaleic acid. It is used for making dresses. It is known as polyester. Properties of Dacron or polyester The clothings made of this fibre do not get wrinkled easily. It is always easily washable. Advantage of synthetic fibre over natural fibre:- Synthetic fibre dried early than natural fibre. It means that synthetic fibre soak less water than natural fibres then dried earlier. Synthetic fibre is shiny and softer than natural fibre. They are unaffected by worms. They are generally cheaper than natural fibres. It is easier to maintain clothes made of synthetic fibres. Disadvantage of synthetic fibre:- They do not absorb sweat easily like natural fibres. They stick to body in summer. Since clothes made of pure synthetic fibres are not comfortable to wear, such fibres are generally mixed with natural fibres. These fibres are known as mixed fibres.
